Celebrating 20 years of empowering independent opticians!

Independents Day 2025 is gearing up to be a truly special anniversary conference with 2-days of business content and CPD (courtesy of our partners at Specialist Club), as well as a celebratory dinner on the Sunday night.

For this landmark event we’re revisiting some of the most popular and insightful talks from some of the top speakers to have donned our stage over the years - an iDay greatest hits if you will. We've themed it 'Back to the Future', as whilst looking back at subjects we've covered in the past, we definitely have the future improvement of independent practice, firmly in our sights.

Once again the venue for the 2-days, including dinner on Sunday, is the conference facilities at the National Motorcycle Museum where it all started back in 2005.

Proven Track Record

In 2005, Proven Track Record, a training and CET provider, launched the first Independents Day business symposium. Since then it has built up a glowing reputation as one of the key meetings in the optical calendar for those involved in independent optometric practice. Our USP has been the recognition that whilst independent practitioners are ophthalmic professionals first, they need to be commercially astute in order to be able to provide their clinical skills. In order to thrive, independent practitioners need to operate sound business as well as clinical practice in equal measure. Recognising this difficult combination of skills and that there is plenty of clinical support out there, Independents Day increasingly focused purely on commercial awareness, business development and simply being the most successful practice, you can be. This will ultimately ensure that patients will continue to receive the best care the independent sector can offer. Lectures always contain useful tips and great ideas from people who have ‘walked the talk’. These ‘pearls’ can be quickly and easily implemented, often at little or no cost, for immediate impact to the business. If you work in independent practice, whether optician or optometrist, practice owner or practice team member (including optical assistants) – you are ALL welcome to attend. Over the last 20-years we’ve welcomed back many colleagues returning year after year. If you’ve not been before, consider coming along this year – you’

A father of five daughters, a proud northerner and Boltonian, Imran is an avid Manchester United fan, and aside from playing football, enjoys all things relating to enterprise, leadership, and community impact!

From an early age, Imran knew he wanted to run his own business. He started his first business, aged 15, having been sacked from 2 jobs within 1 week).

Within days, he was trading in computer equipment, selling to college teachers and the local community. As he neared the end of his college education, he faced a tough decision, whether to grow the business or study to become an Optometrist at University. Unable to choose, he decided to do both.

As well as studying, he continued to build his business. Having successfully completed his degree and professional exams, Imran opened his first optical practice in his local Bolton community with a £2000 loan from his father.

Imran has won many business awards over the years in recognition of his numerous endeavours including EY Scale-Up Entrepreneur of the Year. His work on the iTeddy brand has earned him awards such as Toy Inventor of the Year, and IOD’s NorthWest Young Director of the Year. Imran received an Honorary Doctorate in Enterprise and Innovation from the University of Bolton and was awarded a medal by the University of Manchester for his work in nurturing entrepreneurship.

Imran’s main business, Hakim Group saw double when it was crowned as the UK’s best company to work for, at the same time he was also awarded Best Leader on the Sunday Times Top 100 list, which contained some of the leading CEOs in the UK.

During the COVID pandemic, Imran seized the opportunity to accelerate the entrepreneurial ecosystem Hakim Group could provide to independent opticians. Since then the rapid growth, has led to the group cementing its position as one of the largest optical groups and amongst the most exciting businesses in Healthcare being voted UK Healthcare business of the year in 2024, with an independent family of almost 500 practices across the UK and Ireland, supporting even more communities to see better, hear better and live better.
